Hiking through the vineyards around Würzburg is a treat for body and mind — exploring the area step by step and returning to Hotel am Main in the evening with tired legs. Here are a few of our favourite routes.
Discovering Veitshöchheim
A short walk right into the heart of Veitshöchheim is always worthwhile: the Rococo Garden with its baroque residence, the picturesque old town with St. Vitus parish church, and a stop at the tourist information office along the way. Nearby, you'll also find the show gardens of the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) — the grounds are freely accessible on weekdays, with public guided tours offered from May to September.
Through the vineyards to Thüngersheim
A beautiful route leads through the vineyards above Veitshöchheim towards the neighbouring wine village of Thüngersheim — with views over the Main valley and, in season, the chance to stop at a "Heckenwirtschaft" (seasonal wine tavern) along the way.
The geographical centre of Europe
A slightly longer hike leads to the marker for the geographical centre of Europe, not far from the hotel — a nice destination that combines a bit of trivia with a scenic walk through the countryside.
The two-bank panoramic trail
For a full day out, the panoramic trail along both banks of the Main offers changing views of vineyards, the river and the surrounding villages — ideal for anyone who wants to properly stretch their legs.
Good to know
- Routes are easily reached on foot from the hotel or as a short drive/bike ride to the trailhead
- Sturdy footwear is recommended, as several routes lead through the vineyards
- Combine a hike with a stop at a Heckenwirtschaft in season for a proper Franconian experience
After a day on the trails, our organic breakfast the next morning is the perfect way to start again — or simply relax in the chestnut garden with tired legs.
